How do I determine my computer's MAC address?

Problem

I need to find out my MAC address in order to have the ethernet port in my Dorm room activated, or to report a problem connecting to the wireless network.

Solution

Windows 2000, XP

  1. Click on the start button
  2. Select run
  3. Type in: cmd
  4. This will open a window with a prompt
  5. Type in the following: ipconfig / all
  6. You will get a list of all network settings including your MAC Address
  7. Please note: if you have a wireless card or built in wireless in your computer, you will see more than one address. Please record your LAN address for Dorm activation or your wireless address for wireless troubleshooting.

Windows 9x, NT

These operating systems are not supported on the Downstate Network

Macintosh OS X

  1. Select "About this Mac" from the Apple menu at the top-left of the screen.
  2. Click the "More Info" button from the dialog box that appears. This will activate the System Profiler application.
  3. Select Network from the side menu.
  4. The MAC address is labelled as Ethernet Address.
  5. Please note: if you have a wireless card or built in wireless in your computer, you will see more than one address. Please record your LAN address for Dorm activation or your wireless address for wireless troubleshooting.
