Configuring Mac OS X for automatic updates

Automatic system updates are important to keep your computer secure against outside attacks over the internet. SUNY Downstate requires that all computers connected to the Downstate network have their system software kept up-to-date through automatic updates.

  1. Open the System Preferences utility from the Apple menu at the top-left of the screen.

  2. Select the Software Update preference panel.

  3. Make sure the "Check for updates" check box is selected. You can set frequency of updates from the drop-down menu, but we strongly recommend setting this option to either Daily or Weekly.

  4. Checking the "Download important updates in the background option" is suggested, but not required.
