Computers with the Downstate Norton AntiVirus client installed must to be connected to the Downstate network to get the latest virus definition updates.

This can be a problem for individual who do not use their laptop on campus for extended periods of time.

To update Norton AntiVirus while off-campus, follow these instructions:

Step 1.

Go to the Symantec web site and scroll down to the section entitled "Download Virus Definitions".

Select "Download Virus Definitions (Intelligent Updater Only)".

Click on the "Download Update" button. Select the link to download the new definition file. it should look simular to this: "20050628-023-i386.exe"

Step 2.

Once you have downloaded this file, open it and follow the on-screen instructions to apply the update.

Step 3.

Check to make sure that your definition file has been updated by double-clicking on the Norton shield icon in the system tray. The section "Virus Definition File" should match the date of the update you just downloaded.
