The following table lists key technical specifications required for laptop computers used by students in the Downstate College of Medicine curriculum. Specifications are based on requirements of applications used in learning and examination activities. Students should not plan to use laptops that do not meet these technical specifications, such as smaller screen size or non-recommended operating systems. While machines with the minimum technical specification should be suitable for usage in the curriculum, we have also included a 'recommended' specification for some categories. Users are encouraged to obtain computers with the 'recommended' specification if possible.

Apple operating system-based laptops:
- Two operating systems: Apple OS X and Windows XP or Vista Certain applications require Internet Explorer/Windows. Apple laptops must have installed a licensed copy of Windows XP or Vista.
- Dual boot’ configuration using Boot Camp: Apple laptops must be configured to use Boot Camp to ‘cold-boot’ directly into either Windows XP/Vista or OS X. Use of Parallels Desktop or other third-party software to 'switch' rapidly between Windows and OS X on an Apple laptop will NOT be allowed for some applications.
- Partition: The hard drive will need to be divided into two 'partitions' in order to install Windows with Boot Camp. A minimum of 80 Gb is recommended for the hard drive partition used to install Windows.
